SEO for Bing is an Untapped Opportunity

Most people focus only on Google while doing SEO, since the share of Bing search is much smaller than Google. However Bing can be your greatest unmined opportunity since it powers 24% of search on desktop according to comScore’s Explicit Core Search Share Report for April 2018.

According to data from StatCounter, Google account for 93 percent of mobile search query volume on a global basis, while Yahoo & Bing control 1.79%.

Here are tips for SEO for Bing

Meta Keywords
In 2014 Bing debunked meta keywords having any SEO value. Meta keywords are only useful for bots which crawl the web based on topics and for contextual ad systems. Earlier, they even implied that using them in a way designed to manipulate search results could work against you, because it’s rather seen as a spam signal than a ranking signal.

An agency has reported that for a client which had poor rankings in Bing & Yahoo, they observed significant boost in rankings after meta keyword tags were implemented. We need to keep in mind that this outcome may not be reproduced in all cases. It may be tried with caution.

Keywords
For Google exact match keywords matching is not done. Google relies on Hummingbird, which processes the whole query, namely the whole sentence or meaning, rather than the specific words.
Bing in contrast is simpler in processing broad-matching keywords, and their Webmaster Guidelines emphasize using targeted keywords whenever possible. You will achieve better SERP rankings in Bing SERPs by using exact keywords across your domain, meta descriptions, H1/ H2 title tags, image alt tags.

Backlinks
Bing greater importance to the number of backlinks. Domain age and .gov, .edu, and .org domain extensions are count in establishing trust.

Social Signals
Google has stated that social signals do not have any role in page ranking.
Bing, on the other hand, has stated that social signals do have a role in page ranking. The impact you have in social media, in terms of your followers sharing and engaging with your content, is a positive ranking signal over time.
Invest regularly with your audience on social networks to get engagement such as tweets, shares, likes, and +1s and you will find it will pay off well for your performance on Bing.

Multimedia Content
Bing has stated that “Rich media (Flash, JavaScript, etc.) can lead to Bing not being able to crawl through navigation, or not see content embedded in a webpage.“
Bing advises you to avoid embedding content inside Flash or JavaScript, since Bing bot may not be able to crawl these to  discover the content.

Bing prefers pages with relevant supporting multimedia content: instructional videos, images, graphs, etc. Multimedia enhances user experience and understanding.
On the other hand, Google emphasizes text-based content and may not crawl Flash content effectively.

Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools is truly more advanced than Google Search Console in many ways. You can verify your site and get access to a rich set of data to improve SEO. You can read Guide to Bing Webmaster Tools here
